I believe this William E. Zinn was the William E. Zinn in Company F from Mechanicsburg, 130 Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, during the Civil War, and eventually promoted Captain of Company F. Henry I. Zinn was the first Captain of this company, before being promoted Colonel of the Regiment, see (#221).640 In 1880, William, Annie and family lived in Shermanville, Cumberland County, where William was enumerated as a dentist.641 In 1900, William E. and Mary ?E. were living by themselves in Riverton, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, where William was still listed as a dentist (page 15A). For this census Mary E. was reported not having children living or dead. Perhaps this was a census error or Mary E. was a second wife.

In 1880, George was a cadet in the United States Military Academy, West Point, Orange County, New York.642 He was in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, eventually being promoted to Full Colonel. As one might expect, he and Matilda moved frequently. Colonel Zinn had a distinguished career; for example he was Commander of the Philadelphia District, 1913-1916; Commander of the Second Portland District (Maine), 1916-1917; and had numerous other high echelon positions in the Corps. An online search for "Colonel George A. Zinn" will results in several hits. For example there is a photograph (poor online quality) of Colonel Zinn on a 6 March 1912 Chicago canal tour with the Mayor of Chicago (Carter H. Harrison, Jr.), Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, and two other dignitaries.644
