ONLY THREE CIVIL WAR VETS LIVING
. . . . In all, 113 men from the township enlisted in the Union army in the War of the Rebellion, many of them merely boys 17 and 18 years old. Of this number only two [and one that came into the Township many years later] are yet alive, Lafayette Gaston of the 90th Regiment, O. V. I., who lives in Gallpollis, and Lafayette Hawk, of New Marshfield, of the 36th Regiment, O. V. I. They are cousins. Their lives seemed to run parallell in many instances, both being seventeen when they enlisted. Both were married soon after their return from the army, both are still living with their brides of 1865.
Both are hardy for men of their age. Mr. Gaston was 85 years old Memorial Day. Mr Hawk was 85 the 18th day of August . Last Memorial Day he decorated the grave of the only confederate soldier buried in the New Marshfield Cemetery.—The Athens Messenger (Athens, Ohio), 24 January 1929; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com.
There is a biography of Lafayette Hawk in RootsWeb.com,625 the headline being "Do As You Think Best Is the Advice of 'Lafe' Hawk, After His 86 Years of Adventurous Life... . Waterloo Township Man Has Been Soldier, Farmer, Merchant, Traveling Salesman, County Officer, Notary Public... ."
