MARY5 ANN ZINN (John4, Johannes3, Philip2 Jacob, John1); born circa 1812 in Pennsylvania; baptized in Trinity Reformed Church, a child of John and Susana Zinn, no date;350 married SAMUEL MCDOWELL, born circa 1790 in Pennsylvania. The family was living in Spring Garden Township, York County, in 1850, when Samuel was a farmer. In 1870, Samuel probably had died, and Mary Ann and great aunt Sarah Zinn (#40) were living near Mary Ann's sons John and Isaac McDowell and their families in York, Pennsyylvania.351

John and Susan (no children listed) were still there in 1900, where John was still farming. Also in the family in 1900 was John's uncle George Zinn (#127).

Laura (Zinn) Beecher married (second) John G. Maurer, born 1863, died 1940. He was an undertaker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1930.

124. MAGDALENA5 ZINN (John4, Johannes3, Philip2 Jacob, John1); (often listed as "Lania"), born circa 1822 in Pennsylvania; married WILLIAM DENUES; born circa 1821 in Pennsylvania. In 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880, William, Magdalena and family were living in York, Pennsylvania,358 where William was enumerated as a cabinet maker.

Also living with William and Magdalena and family in 1880 was Adam Fickes, born December 1850 in Pennsylania, single and listed as a wood carver. In 1883, Adam would marriy Fannie Denues, who was a daughter of Charles Zinn and (tentative) Fannie (Haines) Denues.358b Charles Zinn Denues was born August 1823. He was probably the brother of William Denues (who married Magdalena Zinn). A guess would be that William's son Charles Zinn Denue was named for this 1823 Chalres. Charles and daughter Fannie were living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1880, where Charles was listed as a lawyer—besides Fannie, other known children of Charles known from the 1880 federal census were Mary Denues, Charles Denues, Elmer Denues, Lizzie Denues, and John Denues.

This Charles Z. was a son of [—?—] and Wilhelmina Denues; born circa 1792 in Germany, according to the 1850 federal census for Millersville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (page 538). Charles, an attorney, was a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature in 1865, and a veteran of the Civil War, Union side. He enlisted as a Captain in August 1862 and was discharged 24 May 1863 as a Captain in the Pennsylvania 135th Infantry Regiment. According to the History of the York Rifle Company, 1775-1908, page 81, Charles was taken prisoner at Winchester, Virginia (there were several Winchester, Virginia battles). The History also has a picture of Captain Charles Z. Denues on page 103.

  373 i. Charles6 Zinn Denues; born March 1842; married Catherine (Kate) Altman, born June 1843 in Pennsylvania. In 1860, Charles, single ande living with his parents, was enumerated as a printer. In 1880, Charles, Kate and child William were living in West Manchester, York County, where Charles was a painter. By 1900, Charles and Kate were living in York, Pennsylvania where Charles Z. was enumerated as an undertaker (page 7A). Charles and Catherine were still in York in 1920, where Charles was listed as an undertaker, "own business" (page 19B). Their son William and family were also living with them in 1920. As indicated above, do not confuse 1842 Charles Zinn Denues, son of William and Magdalena (Zinn) Denues, with his uncle, 1823 Charles Zinn Denues.

(a) William L. Denues; born July 1867 in Pennsylvania; married Sadie R. [—?—]; born August 1866 in Pennsylvania. In 1900, the family was living next to William's parents in York, where William also was listed as an undetaker. By 1920, William and family were living with his parents in York, where William L. was listed as a finisher in a ventilating works. By 1930, the family was still in York, where William was listed as a proprietor of a furniture store (page 7A). Also with the family in 1930 was Dorothy Lau, "daughter-in-law," born circa 1914 in Pennsylvania—I can not place Dorothy.

(i) Kate E. Denues; born November 1886. In 1920 and 1930, Kate, single and living with her parents was enumerated as a clerk in a silk mill in 1920 and a clerk in a department store in 1930.

Denues, born April 1879 in Pennsylvania, listed as a baker—was he the Benjamin F. born March 1880 (see #379).

In 1860, Andrew and Catherine and children Charles and Ellen (Ella) were living in West Manchester, York, Pennsylvania, where Andrew was listed as a cabinet maker.364

133. WILLIAM5 ZINN (Andrew4, Johannes3, Philip2 Jacob, John1); born circa 1831 in Pennsylvania; married (first) CAROLINA [—?—], born 1831 in Germany; married second SARAH J. [—?—], born circa 1850 in Pennsylvania.

In 1860, William, Carolina and family were living in Spring Garden, York County, Pennsylvania where William was listed as a shoemaker. Also in the family in 1860 was Elizabeth Longweder, widow, born circa 1814 in Pennsylvania. I believe she was William's sister; her children known from the 1860 census (all born in Pennsylvania): James Longweder, born circa 1834; and Mary Longweder, born circa 1837. In 1870, William, Carolina and family were in York, Pennsylvania, where William was a watchman in a shop.

In 1880, William and second wife Sarah and family were living in York, Pennsylvania, where William was listed as a water tax collector in 1880. In 1910, William, age 79, Sarah and youngest child Jennette Zinn were living in York, Pennsylvania.366

In 1900, Leah, listed as a widow, was living with her son John and his family in Paradise Township, York County.370

JOHN5 ZINN (John4 R., John3, Philip2 Jacob, John1); born circa 1836 near McSherrystown, Adams County, Pennsylvania; married ANN ELIZA SLENTZ (also Slence); born 31 December 1838 in Pennsylvania.371 She was a daughter of Nicholas and Rachel Slentz.372 Both John and Ann Eliza are buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania.

In 1870, the family was living in Conewago Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, where John was enumerated as a farmer.373

Anna May Zinn; born July 1865; died 19 September 1932 as a result of an automobile accident that also claimed the life her daughter Janette Miller the following week—the accident of their car with a heavy oil-sprinker truck was at the intersection of Route 30 and Hunterstown Road (one report was in the 28 September 1932 The Gettysburg Times). Ann May Zinn married Frank (Francis) Rider; born January 1863 in Pennsylvania. The family lived in McSherrystown, Adams County, where Frank was a cigar maker in 1900 and by 1910 the proprietor and owner of the Park Hotel and restaurant in New Oxford, Pennsylvania.
Children known from federal censuses (all born in Pennsylvania):374 and from several newspaper articles in Gettysburg and New Oxford newspapers:
(a) George Washington Rider, born February 1885; died 25 January 1944 in New Haven, Connecticut; buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, Pennsylvania. He did not marry, According to an obituary in The Gettysburg Times, 27 January 1944, George was a veteran of Wordl War I and a cigarmaker in New Haven, Connecticut.

George Washington Rider, age 33, has been slightly wounded in action "Somewhere in France." A telegram to that effect has been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Rider, Littletown. He is a member of a regiment of military infantry,
The telegram sent by Adjutant General McClain reads as follows" "We regret to report that your son. George W. Rider, has been slightly wounded while in action on March 17."—The Gettysburg Times, 6 April; 1910; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com.
Another newspaper item reported George was "gassed March 17, 1918, one of the first Adams county boys to be listed among the wounded."

(b) Charles M. Rider, born February 1886; died 13 March 1930 at the home of his parents in New Oxford, Pennsylvania. Charles did not marry.
(c) Margaret Rider, born September 1888; died 11 March 1939; married Gideon M. Haas. They lived in Red Lion, Pennsylvania.

(e) Roscoe Rider, born August 1892; married Mabel Houck; daughter of John and Amelia (Lauer) Houck of Hanover, Pennsylvania. Roscoe was proprietor of Ryder's Restaurant in New Oxford, Pennsylvania.

Ferdinand Rider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rider of Littlestown, who was recently discharged from the navy, left on Friday for Philadelphia, where on Monday he resumed his former position as city solicitor for the National Biscuit Company.—New Oxford Item, 6 March 1919; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com.

(g) Nevin Rider, born circa 1903; married Blanche [—?—]; born circa 1908 in Pennsylvania. In 1930 Nevin, Blanche and daughter Shirley Rider were living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (page 56A).

  411 iii. Emma Alverta Zinn; born 31 January 1867; died 3 January 1944 in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania; married James Lawrence; died circa 1935. Alverta and James probably did not have children.

Mrs. Alverta Lawrence, 76, widow of James Lawrence, 49 West Main Street, McSherrystown [Adams County, Pennsylvania], died Monday morning at 6:30 o'clock at Hanover hospital, where she had been admitted as a patient Friday evening.
Mrs. Lawrence was a daughter of the late John and Eliza Slentz Zinn, and was born January 31, 1867. Her husband preceded her in death nine years ago. Her only survivors are a number of nieces and nephews. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover.—The Gettysburg Times, 4 January 1944; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com.

  412 iv. Louisa Ellen Zinn; born circa 1870; married John H. Weaver, born January 1872; died 23 January 1961; buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, Penssylvania. In 1900 and 1910, John, Louisa, and daughter Ruth were living in Conewago Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, where John was a cigar maker, and daughter Ruth was a teacher, public schools in 1910.375 John married (second) Emmie Stiltz, who was still living in 1974 when Ruth died.
Child of John and Louisa was
(a) Ruth A. Weaver, born August 1892; died March 1974 in Hanover, Pennsylvania; buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, Pennsylvania; married, 22 March 1913, Charles Rife, born 1890 in Pennsylvania. Charles, Ruth and son Clyde lived in Conowago Township, Adams County (page 12B) in 1920 and in Union Township, Adams County, in 1930 (page 6B),where Charles was farming. According to Ruth's obituary in The Gettysburg Times, 2 March 1974, was survived by five step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren.

A quiet wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Weaver, near McSherrystown, Saturday, at 6 p. m., when their daughter, Miss Ruth A. Weaver was married to Charles Rife, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Rife of Brushtown. Rev. A. M. In 1880 and 1900, the family was living in Pike Township, Clark County, Ohio, where Peter was listed as a farmer.377 Peter’s mother, Matilda Zinn, and three of Peter’s siblings, Richard, Sarah and William, were living two dwellings from Peter in 1880.378

In 1930, the family was in North Hampton Township, Clark County, where Arthur was a building contractor.385

The family was in Pike Township, Pike County, Ohio, in 1880 (page 172). By 1900 and in 1910, the family was in Tully Township, Van Wert County, Ohio.387 Aaron died in Tully Township 26 January 1912 (re Ohio Deaths, 1908-1928, online in ancestry.com).

In 1880, John, Sarah and children Annetta and Artemus were living Pike Township, Clark County, Ohio (census page 176). In 1900, the family was in Van Wert County, Ohio. John was a farmer.393 By 1910, Sarah had died, and John, no occupation, and children Estie and Daniel were still in Tully Township, Van Wert County, Ohio (census page 16A).
