Generation Four
86.
JOSEPH4 ZINN ( John Jacob3, John Nicholas2, John1), born 14 July 1800; 255 married SUSANNA [—?—].
In 1830, Joseph Zinn was living in Millcreek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania.256 His household at that time contained one male age 30-39 (Joseph); two females age under 5; one female age 5-9 (Matilda?); and one female age 20-29 (Susannah). Joseph was still living in Millcreek, Erie County, in 1840 (census page 98), when the federal census listed, besides Joseph, a male child under five, a female child under 5 and four females 10-30—possibly Susannah was deceased by this time. In 1860, Joseph was living with his married daughter Matilda (Ziegler) in Elk Creek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where Joseph was enumerated as a laborer.257
I could not find Joseph Zinn in any federal census of 1850. Possibly in 1850, Joseph was living with his married daughter Matilda and husband Emanuel Ziegler and family in Canada (location not known)—I could not find Emanuel Ziegler or Matilda Ziegler in any of the United States federal censuses for 1850.
Note: in 1850 there was a Joseph Sinn and family living in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. This Joseph Sinn, a farmer, born circa 1800 in New Jersey, his wife was Lydia and children were Joseph, Mary, Julia, Hannah, Margaret, and Uphema Sinn.258 Living next to them was a Theodate Sinn, born circa 1849, and his family.
One known child of Joseph and Susannah [—?—] Zinn:

Matilda5 Zinn;
born 9 December 1822; died 25 March 1862; married Emanuel Ziegler.
Possibly other children of Joseph and Susanna Zinn were Sophia J. Zinn, who married, 8 July 1856, Merrit Hoskins, both of Erie County, Pennsylvania;259 and Catherine Zinn, who married, 14 October 1841, William Ferguson, both of Erie County.260 I can not place Sophia or Catherine with either Daniel or Conrad Zinn’s family.

87. GEORGE4 ZINN ( John Jacob3, John Nicholas2, John1), born 24 April 1808, in Pennsylvania; 261 married ELIZA M. [—?—], born circa 1813 in New York state.
By 1830, George was probably in Erie County, Pennsylvania. Also appearing in Erie County in 1830 were his brothers Daniel, Conrad, and Joseph—perhaps they all came from Cumberland County to Erie County as a unit in the mid 1820s. The 1830 federal census for Erie County suggests that George could have been living with his brother Conrad in Millcreek Township. In 1840 George was enumerated in Millcreek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania: 1 male age 5-10, 1 male 30-40 (George), 1 female under 5 (perhaps daughter Mary) and 1 female 20-30 (wife).262 Brothers Conrad, Daniel and Joseph and families stayed in Erie County, but George had moved in the early 1840s (as indicated by two children being born in Ohio in 1844 and 1846) to Ohio. By 1850, the family was in La Porte County, Indiana. George was enumerated as a farmer in the federal censuses. In 1880, apparently Eliz had died; George and children Ritta, Docia, Mary and Alveretta (Peak) were living next to George's daughter Ida Patrick and family in Noble Township, La Porte County, Indiana (page 371 or page 10).
Note: There are ancestry.com family trees citing George (and his brother Joseph) as being born in Union Mills, La Porte County, Indiana, in 1807. This is not correct. George and all his brothers were born in Pennsylvania. Indeed La Porte County and the plat of Union Mills did not come into existence until 1832 ( History of La Porte County, page 405; published by C. C. Chapman and Company 1880).
Children of George and Eliza M. Zinn known from the 1850-1880 federal censuses for Noble Township, La Porte County, Indiana263 (the 1860 federal census—but not the 1850 and 1870 censuses—lists George's wife as Louise M; also ancestry.com has indexed the name as George Zirin in 1860 and as George Zeiner in 1870):

George W.5 Zinn;
born circa 1834 in Pennsylvania. George was not with the family after the 1860 federal census. I have not found him in subsequent censuses. There was another George W. Zinn who lived in Noble Township, Cass County, Indiana. He was born circa 1822 in Maryland (with his parents born in Pennsylvania). This George W. Zinn married Eliza [—?—], born circa 1830 in Indiana; they had eight children listed in the 1880 federal census.264 I can not place this George W. Zinn.

Mary E. Zinn;

iii. |
Adelia Jane (usually listed as Dell) Zinn;
born circa 1845 in Ohio; married John E. Zeigler (Jr.), born circa 1847 in Pennsylvania. John E.'s father was also John E. Zeigler, born circa 1816 in Pennsylvania. In 1870, John and Dell were living with John's father John E. Zeigler and wife Susanna [—?—]; born circa 1818 in Pennsylvania (she was probably John E. (Sr.) second wife).
In 1880, John, Dell and son Dean were living in Union Mills. La Porte County, Indiana, where John Ziegler (sic = Zeigler) was enumerated as a farmer (page 315). In 1910, John and Dell, no children (census reports she had one child, not living in 1910), were in Noble Township, La Porte County, Indiana;265 no occupation listed for John, but Dell was enumerated as a carpet weaver. (This might be a census mistake; I believe her sister Retta, who was listed next, was the carpet weaver). Also in the family in 1910 was Adelia's sister Retta and Adelia's adopted sister Alveretta Peak.
Child of John E. and Dell (Zinn) Zeigler:
(a) Dean Zeigler; born circa 1877 in Indiana. Dean had died by the time of the 1910 federal census.

88. Henry4 Zinn ( John3 Philip, John Nicholas2, John1), born 10 March 1800 (is marriage date of his parents wrong?—his age was given as 59 in the 1860 federal census 267) in Pennsylvania; 268 died 1870; married, 19 July 1825, in Franklin County, Ohio. SARAH AGLER; born 1801 in Ohio; died 1876. According to Franklin County, Marriage Records (online in ancestry.com), "Richard Agler says his sister Sarah Agler is over 18." Sarah was a daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Van Gundy) Agler. 269 One genforum message reports Henry and Sarah having 10 children, one being David Zinn, born 27 August 1830 in Mifflin, Franklin County, Ohio, married Ursula Jane Schrock. 270

99. ANNIS4 TARR ( Rebecca3 Zinn, John Nicholas2, John1), born 28 March 1822 in Gallia County, Ohio; married HAMILTON BURT; born 31 October 1818 in Milton Township, Jackson County, Ohio; died 7 March 1894. 293
Hamilton's parents were probably Samuel (born circa 1786) and Rebecca Burt (born circa 1798), both born in Massachusetts. They were living next to Hamilton and Annis in 1850, when Hamilton was enumerated as a miller in Milton Township, Jackson County, Ohio.294
In 1860 the family was still in Milton Township, Jackson County; also living with the family in 1860 was Samuel M. Burt, born 1790 in Massachusetts, carpenter—undoubtedly Hamilton's father. By 1870, the family was in Clinton Township, Vinton County, and in 1880 in Jackson County, Ohio. Hamilton was listed as a farmer for all censuses. 295 In 1900, Annis, widow, was living with her widowed daughter, Chassie (Burt) Monahan.
