25. JOHN3 JACOB ZINN (Nicholas2, John1); baptized 9 May 1771 in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania;78 died (tentative) 1817; married ANNA MARIA (MARY) HOOVER;79 born 22 March 1765 in Dover Township, York County. One report lists John Jacob dying 1817 and Anna Maria dying 12 December 1831.80 Most reports and documents list John Jacob as “Jacob,” instead of “John.”

Anna Maria Hoover ancestry has been listed in several Ancestry.com Family Trees reports. She was a daughter of Johan Conrad and Anna Maria (Lentz) Huber. Johan Conrad Huber was born 25 August 1734, probably in Germany (Swabia area) or less likely in Pennsylvania; died 30 June 1806 in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania; married ANNA MARIA LENTZ; born 19 July 1731 in Germany; died 28 July 1808 in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania.81 Anna Maria was reported to be a daughter of Bernard Lentz.82 Johan Conrad Huber's parents were Johan Michael Conradt Huber, born 20 September 1706 in Germany; died 1772 in Pennsylvania;and Anna Barbara Wernsin, born 1706 in Germany. The parents of Johan Michael were said to be George Jonas and Anna Maria (Kreutzer) Huber.83

One of Anna Maria’s brothers, Martin Hoover, married Catherine Zinn (#14), a daughter of Philip Jacob and first wife Mary Elizabeth (Bartmess) Zinn;84 hence John Jacob Zinn, who married Anna Maria Hoover, and Catherine (Zinn) Hoover were first cousins.

Known children of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) Zinn (all born in Pennsylvania):

Perhaps another daughter of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) Zinn was Nancy Zinn, who was the sponsor of Matilda Zinn’s baptism; Matilda (#235) being a daughter of Joseph and Susanna Zinn, born 1822 in Pennsylvania.

I do not yet have a primary source stating that Conrad and Daniel were sons of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) Zinn. However, there is far-reaching circumstantial evidence; and I feel confident in placing Conrad and Daniel as children of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) Zinn; and therefore as descendants of John Frederick and Anna Sophia (Schneider) Zinn, the founders in North American of this Zinn family.

(1) There were only a few early Zinn families in Pennsylvania that could be candidates for Conrad’s family. I have been working on the Zinns for about 30 years; and dates and locations collected from a plethora of Zinn records and genealogies eliminate most early Zinn families except for the descendants of the Frederick and Anna Sophia (Schneider) Zinn family of York County, Pennsylvania, and the descendants of Johannes (John) Jacob Zinn, born 9 April 1761, died 1 June 1832 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This Johannes Zinn was a prosperous tanner. His wife was Catherine (Greenawalt) Zinn, born 20 July 1772 in Lebanon County—then part of Lancaster County—Pennsylvania, died 1 September 1823 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There is a biography of this family,88 and I now have presumably a complete list of birth records for the children of Johannes and Catherine Zinn from the Salem Reformed Church of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There was no Conrad or Daniel, although there was a Wilhelm Zinn, born 28 January 1799, which was the same year that Conrad was born.

(2) Two of the children of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) with primary source documentation were Joseph Zinn, born 14 July 1800; and George Zinn, born 24 April 1808.89 Their birth and baptism records are in “Records of Strayer’s (Salem) Reformed Church, Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania, 1745-1804,” volume 1, and “1804-1834,” volume 2, the parents being Jacob and Anna Maria Zinn.90 Both Joseph and George were eventually enumerated in Millcreek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, the same township in Erie County where Daniel and Conrad lived. Joseph Zinn first appeared in the Erie County, Pennsylvania, censuses in 1830, the year that Conrad and Daniel were first enumerated in Erie County, and younger brother George was enumerated in Erie County in 1840.

(3) If Conrad and Daniel were also children Jacob and Anna Maria Zinn, their names should most likely be recorded in the Strayer’s Church records, Daniel and Conrad both being born between 1797 and 1799. However the introduction to the “Records of Strayer’s (Salem) Reformed Church,” state that records are incomplete; and this would especially appear to be the case for records in the 1790s, the decade when Conrad and Daniel were known to be born:

Years                    Number of entries
1770-1779         59
1780-1789         58
1790-1799         17 (no entries for 1792-1796 and 1798)
1800-1809         70

(4) Another child of John Jacob and Anna Maria Zinn was John Zinn, born 8 February 1792; baptized 9 April 1792 in First Moravian Church, York, York County, Pennsylvania,91 parents being listed as Jacob Zinn and Maria Huber. The Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, tax lists between 1817 and 182392 lists only three Zinns, Conrad, Daniel and a John Zinn. This John was most likely the John Zinn, son of John Jacob and Maria, and therefore brother of Conrad and Daniel.

(5) Recently three online World Tree projects and one Family Search, Individual Records, Family History Department, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints list Conrad, Daniel, Joseph and George Zinn as children of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) Zinn—although no sources were reported nor descendants listed.93 Anna Maria Hoover’s father is listed as Johan Conradt Huber and could be the source for Conrad’s given name.

(6) A final important point is that I can not prove that Conrad and Daniel Zinn were not sons of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) Zinn.

In short, the circumstantial evidence, I feel, is overwhelming that Conrad and Daniel are children of John Jacob and Anna Maria (Hoover) Zinn; and therefore descendants of the John Frederick and Anna Sophia (Schneider) Zinn family.

Leticia Zinn; born circa 1835; married John Phillips.

Information on "Charles Zinn" (#108) is confusing. Possibly there were two Charles Zinn's born in Jackson County, Ohio, in 1833, both having a Samuel Zinn as father. One, as indicated above, is supposed to have died circa 1853 and is buried in Whitsel Cemetery. The other Charles Zin was born 13 February 1833 in Jackson County, Ohio; died 1 February 1904 in Sedgwick County, Iowa, and has extensive biographical information in two early Marion County, Iowa, history and biographical books.113b Possibly, indeed probably, the Charles Zinn and the Charles Zin were the same person, meaning that our Charles Zinn did not die in 1853. I can not find the Whitsel Cemetery on online sources; and the item that Charles was a son of Samuel and Margaret Eutsler is from “Descendants of Frederick Johannes ‘John’ Zinn,” by Walter K Crawford III, online at
(http://www.wkc3.com/zinn.htm—link expired), and information provided in 2009 by James Martin (martin46538@embarqmail.com).

Two items of note are that the Charles Zin (one "n") and his children and grandchildren, re federal censuses, consistently spelled their name Zin instead of Zinn, and biographical information report Charles Zin's ancestors were of English descent. However 1860 and 1870 federal censuses link the Charles Zin dying 1904 with siblings Charlotte and Leticia Zinn who we know were children of our Samuel and Margaret (Eutsler) Zinn. Possibly, indeed probably, the Charles Zinn and the Charles Zin were the same person, meaning that our Charles Zinn did not die in 1833. The matter is unresolved. Here is a synopsis of the Charles Zin family as taken from federal censuses and the Marion County biographical books:

Charles Zin; born 13 February 1833 in Jackson County, Ohio; died 1 February 1904 (death date from biographical information on his son George Zin); married Elizabeth Long; born circa 1838 in Ohio; died 1913 in Carlise, Iowa. In 1860, Charles, presumably sister Charlotte Zin and presumably father Samuel Zin, born circa 1790 in Pennsylvania, were living in Bellair, Appanoose County, Iowa, where Charles was farming (census page 35). In 1910, Elizabeth, widow, was living with her married daughter, Mary, at which time Elizabeth was listed with six children, five living;
Children of Charles and Elizabeth (Long) Zin (all born in Iowa):

Zin; born January 1865; died 2 November 1946 in Spokane, Washington (re Washington Death Dates, 1940-1996); married, 21 November 1888, Irene Ida Irene Adams; born 22 September 1868 in Missouri; died 1939. She was a daughter of William and Mary Jane (London) Banta.113c Calvin, Rene and family lived in Dallas, Marion County, where Calvin farmed, was a merchant, painter, and was in real estate (re censuses). Apparently Calvin and Ida Irene (Adams) Zin did not have children.
