Generation Two

2. PHILIP2 JACOB ZINN (John1); born 25 May 1737, in Germany; died 4 May 1809; buried in Strayer’s Cemetery (Salem Union Cemetery),11 Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania; married (first) MARY (MARIA) ELIZABETH BARTMESS; born 3 March 1738 in Wahlenau (Baden, the Rhineland area), Germany; died 10 October 1771, apparently in childbirth; buried in Strayer’s Cemetery. Maria Elizabeth was a daughter of Johann Peter (Petrus) Bartmess.12 Philip Jacob married (second), 5 April 1772, ANNA KINTA (CONAGUNDA) HOFFMAN. Conagunda Hoffman’s father was John Nicholas Hoffman. Anna Kinta died 1784 in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania.13

Philip Jacob bought his parents’ farm in Dover Township, York County, 4 February 1763, with the stipulation that John Philip and wife agree to care for his parents “John Zinn and Anna Sophia.”14 Philip Jacob Zinn’s will was written 6 April 1809, recorded 15 May 1809.15 The will mentions wife Anna Kinta Zinn, and children John, Elizabeth, Margaret, Jacob, Catherine, Nicholas, Mary, Barbara, Magdalena, Christina, and Adam. Executors were “friend” John Beitzel and son Nicholas. John Beitzel was probably the John Beitzel, husband of Catherine (Metzler) Beitzel—John and Catherine Beitzel were the parents of Mary Elizabeth Beitzel, who married Johannes (John) Zinn (#8).16 The entire will of Philip Jacob Zinn is in “Bio of Philip Jacob-2 Zinn (1737-1809),” by Ron Houghton.17 This biography and the one on Philip Jacob’s father, John Frederick Zinn, also by Ron Houghton, cite several original German sources, apparently translated by Ron Houghton.

Charlotte Sprenkle was a daughter of William and Anna Catherine (Erhard/Erhardt/Ehrhard) Sprenkle. William was born in Germany and died 16 January 1772 in York County, Pennsylvania.27 The surname is sometimes spelled Sprenckle and Sprinkle.

Apparently by 1802, when son Abraham was born in Ohio, the family had moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio.

Children of Nicholas and first wife Charlotte (Sprenkle) Zinn (all apparently born in York County, Pennsylvania):28

21 i. Anna Margaret Zinn, born 7 November 1760; baptized 22 November 1760 in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, York, York County, Pennsylvania.29

+ 35 xv. Abraham Zinn, born 1802 in Ohio; married Elizabeth Brooks.
36 xvi. Sarah Zinn, born circa 1803 in Ohio; married Henry Jones, born circa 1802 in Ohio.34 Possibly, he was the Henry Jones, born circa 1802 in Ohio; married Sarah [—?—], born circa 1803 in Ohio. In 1850 this family was in Rush County, Indiana, where Henry was enumerated as a farmer; their children known from the 1850 federal census (all born in Indiana):35 (1) Thomas Jones, born circa 1826; (2) Joseph Jones, born circa 1830; (3) Mary A. Jones, born circa 1832; (4) Elizabeth Jones, born circa 1834; (5) Hannah Jones, born circa 1836; (6) Nancy Jones, born circa 1839; (7) Samuel Jones, born circa 1842; (8) Henry W. Jones, born circa 1845; married Evaline [—?—], born circa 1845 in Ohio; in 1870 Henry, Evaline, and daughter (a) Netta Jones, born circa 1869 in Indiana, were living next to Henry's parents—Henry was listed as a farmer; (9) Dulcinia Jones (daughter), born circa 1848; and (10) Omer Jones. born circa 1857.

There was a Sarah Zian, also spelled Zinn, born circa 1784 near the Juniata River in Pennsylvania. She died after 1864 in Peoria, County, Illinois. She married a Henry Jones, born 1782 in Culpepper County, Virginia and died August 1849 in Peoria County, Illinois. This Sarah and Henry would not appear to be the Sarah and Henry of our concern. For more information on this Illinois family, see "Jones Family Genealogy,"36 and "Our Folk - Hart Family."

4. ANNA2 CATHERINE ZINN (John1), born 20 May 1745 in Pennsylvania;38 died 1811;39 married (first) 17 December 1761 MATTHIAS/MATTHEW GANSERT (also spelled Dansert, and other spellings); born 30 May 1740 in Frederick Township, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died 4 December 1772 in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania; buried in Strayer’s Cemetery, Dover Township. Anna Catherine and Matthew sponsored several baptisms in the Strayer’s Reformed Church, and Matthew’s name was usually listed as Gansert (could this also be Conser).

Anna Catherine married (second) Frederick Lenhart, who was born circa 1752, a son of Johan Peter and Maria Margaretha [—?—] Lenhart.40 This would be indicated by sponsorship of baptisms in Strayer’s Reformed Church, and also by the 1809 will of Catherine Lenhart of the Borough of York, York County, Pennsylvania.41 In her will, she mentions brother Nicholas Zinn and his son Jacob Zinn (#25). Frederick Lenhart's brother William Lenhart married Ann Maria Beitzel. Catherine had issue, but not certain by whom, because she mentions “Unto my Son in law Andrew Cremer and Elizabeth his wife. . .” According to another family tree report, Catherine’s husband was Mathias Conser, not Gansert, and children were (1) Catharine Conser and (2) Elizabeth Conser.42 Is Conser and Cremer different translations from this German will?
