1790-1840 CENSUS AGE CATEGORIES (except for 1790, pertaining here to
"free white males and females").
1790: (1) free white males 16 and over, (2) free white males under 16,
(3) free white females, (4) all other free persons, (5) slaves.
1800 and 1810 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16,
(3) 16 and under 26, (4) 26 and under 45, (5) 45 and over.
1820 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16, (3) 16 and
under 26, (4) 16 to 18 (males only),* (5) 26 and under 45, (6) 45 and
over. *The extra category was for males, to determine the total
manpower that could be called up in times of war. Besides confusing
people interested in their ancestors, this category apparently confused
census takers, resulting in many reports of (3) and (4) that are
suspect.
1830-1840 (males and females): (1) under 5, (2) 5 and under 10, (3) 10
and under 15, (4) 15 and under 20, (5) 20 and under 30, (6) 30 and
under 40, (7) 40 and under 50 (8) 50 and under 60 (9) 60 and under 70,
(10) 70 and under 80, (11) 80 and under 90, (12) 90 and under 100, and
(13) 100 and over.
The 1910 Miracode census is an index of the 1910 United States Federal
Census, and is a modified version of the Soundex system. It is only
available (2001) for the following states: Alabama, Arkansas,
California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma,
Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West
Virginia. The Miracode census index is available online for some, but
not all (as of 2001), of these states from Ancestry.com.
